Free Music Reading Lessons

Learning to read and/or play music can be fun yet tedious. While it is suggested that children learn music as a discipline at an early age with current software programs learning can be expedited at any age. Music theory lessons are generally offered for 45 minutes to an hour and can be rather costly. As of 2011 however, there are free download programs accessible via the Internet.
  1. Sight Reading Musical Software

    • This program is considered a virtual music theory teacher. Sight Reading Musical Software introduces students to music theory basics with both acoustic and digital music instrumentation. After you have familiarized yourself with the program, it will play a musical phrase and ask you to play it back.

    Ineractive Reading Lab

    • The Interactive Reading Lab offers a multi-sensory approach to both teaching and learning. It includes text, rich text files, audio (MP3) and images in jpeg format via computer-based musical lessons. Also included are full score reports, audio readings and immediate feedback. For music teachers there is access to other affiliated websites to assist you in creating your own digital music lab.

    Notation Composer

    • Once you have learned the basics of reading music, you can be able to write and compose music as well.The Notation Composer enables you to create and/or arrange your own music. You can compose or download music from the Internet and then arrange it for yourself. The Composer will also help you produce professional looking sheet music.

    MIDI Note Composer

    • For the new and advanced composer in you, the MIDI Note Composer allows you to transpose your own music for voice and/or instrumentation. Transpose music into a key suitable to your own preferred instrument or voice range. Prepare dummy lead sheets for the piano and/or guitar. This program also offers a musical accompaniment for you to sing or play along to.
