How to Measure Vocal Pitch

One of a vocalist's biggest concerns is making sure that they sing on pitch. This means to sing the notes of a song accurately, landing directly on the notes without being sharp or flat. This is one of the larger challenges a vocalist faces along with proper breathing, projection and vibrato. You can check that you are singing on pitch by measuring the voice using a tuner, just like you would a guitar.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the tuner and lay it on a desk or counter top near you. The built-in microphone can pick up audio signals accurately from close range.

    • 2

Sing a note into the tuner. When no instrument cable is plugged in to the device, it automatically defaults to the microphone setting. This is useful for tuning acoustic guitars as well as vocals.

    • 3

Read the tuner's display while singing the note to measure the vocal pitch. If you are flat, sing the note slightly higher. If you are sharp, sing the note slightly lower.
