How to Audition to Sing the Star Spangled Banner for the New York Mets

"The Star Spangled Banner" officially became the national anthem for the United States in 1931, although it was first written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 as a poem under the title "Defense of Fort M'Henry." Prior to the beginning of a game, the New York Mets, along with all other sporting teams, sing "The Star Spangled Banner." While celebrity musicians are often called to perform the anthem, regular citizens may audition to sing the anthem for the Mets by attending the annual National Anthem Audition Search.

Navigate your web browser to the official New York Mets website. Locate the Press Release section of the website, and search for "National Anthem Audition" information. You may also contact the Mets at 718-559-3119 and inquire about current National Anthem Audition dates and requirements. Auditions are only held once a year, thus if you missed the current year's round of auditions you must wait until the following year. The auditions are typically held in early spring, so check for the announcement during late winter.

Locate the National Anthem Audition press release, and take note of the audition date, time and location. The audition may be held at Citi Field or at another location within New York State.

    • 3

Prepare your audition materials. The press release will state what songs are accepted for audition. The audition typically consists of a 30- to 60-second excerpt from a song of your choice; however, do not sing the National Anthem as the producers wish to hear your voice outside of this song choice for the first round. You will be performing the song a capella, which means no instrumental tracks or background music.

Arrive at the audition location early. Typically, only the first hundred applicants are guaranteed an audition. If you are able to audition, you will sing in front of several producers. If you pass the first round of auditions, you will then head to the next round where you will perform "The Star Spangled Banner" for the producers. The second round of auditions is not held on the same day as the initial auditions, so if you are traveling to the audition, prepare to stay in the area for more than one day. The producers make their selections after the second round.
