How to Do a Drop Vocal

Many singers struggle when trying to hit notes in the lower range of their capabilities. The voice may start cracking or wobbling on the lower notes and trying to push the words out with your breath will only make the problem worse. Singing is a technical exercise and technique is especially needed in extreme high and low notes. Doing a drop vocal where you sing in your lower register requires proper posture, breathing and preparation.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your back straight. Proper posture is vital in realizing your full vocal range as a singer.

    • 2

Bend your knees and hips slightly. This helps you fully use your breath without straining your diaphragm. Likewise, your ears should be over your shoulders, which helps eliminate neck strain.

    • 3

Breathe into your hip sockets by keeping your breathing low in the diaphragm and gently pushing the breath down as you sing lower notes. Move your solar plexus forward and pull your lower abdominal muscles up to support the breath in the lower register.

    • 4

Sing vowel sounds to get yourself warmed up and to correct any incorrect posture or breathing techniques. A brief yodel is also useful as vocal warm-up.

    • 5

Lift your cheek muscles while moving your jaw down and back during enunciation to help prevent voice warbling in the lower notes.

    • 6

Shift the larynx gently down and forward to further assist in dropping your voice to lower tones effectively.
