Cover a tune. If you’re an experienced songwriter who can comfortably write guitar music in a matter of days or weeks, take some time to compose a basic song structure that agrees with the tone of your song. First time composers should consider borrowing a tune from a classic love song like Elvis’s “Love me Tender,” or “She’s Got a Way” by Billy Joel, or go with a modern favorite, like Pink’s “Love Song.”
Listen to some of your favorite romantic songs and some of hers too. What kind of music moves your girl? Is she into Alicia Keys, or is she more of a Celine Dion fan? Modeling your love song after her tastes shows her you pay attention to those small details about her, and care enough to draw on her tastes for ideas.
Tell her what you love about her. The music is important, but it’s the lyrics that truly define a love song. Think about what you want to say to her. Do you want to celebrate the lovely flush in her face after a long walk, or are you more interested in praising her intellect because you admire how she always says the right thing after a hard day at school or work?
Use adult language. Your lyrics don’t always have to rhyme, especially if you need to wrestle with the English language to come up with a word that rhymes with “beautiful.” Instead, use descriptive language that reflects the effort you put into your prose. For example, don’t sing about how “nice” she looks. Instead tell her that the vibrant red of her lips captures your breath, or that the sound of her delicate voice has a way of quieting your spirit.
Be honest. Sincerity is a must when you communicate with your significant other. Don’t tell your girlfriend of two weeks that she completes you unless your relationship is really that serious. It’s not just about what sounds romantic. A love song should celebrate the true state of your relationship.
Keep it simple. Don’t distract from the real purpose of your love song by giving too much information. Avoid giving a lengthy report about how you first met, and don’t compare her with past girlfriends. Tell her how you feel and leave time to enjoy her reaction. Give her the opportunity to show you her gratitude.
