What is the proper behavioral etiquette when you are in another country and that national anthem being played or sung?

National Anthems

When the national anthem of another country is being played or sung take your cue from the citizens of the country. Usually, they have a prescribed manner of acknowledging it. It is advised that you follow the lead of them when it feels right to do so.

Here are some specific examples of how you can show respect to another country's national anthem:

- Stand up straight and at attention.

- Remove your hat if you are wearing one.

- Place your right hand over your heart.

- Sing or hum the lyrics to the national anthem if you know them, or otherwise remain silent.

- Do not talk, applaud, or make any noise during the national anthem.

- Respect the national flag of that country.

- If the flag should be lowered to be draped over a coffin, then stand at attention and place your right hand over your heart.
