Ella Fitzgerald began singing in her teens, and her professional singing career started in 1934, when she was discovered by Chick Webb at the Apollo Theater. She rose to fame in the late 1930s and 1940s as the lead vocalist of Webb's big band, and became known for her unparalleled improvisational skills, distinctive phrasing and vocal range.
