Who wrote the national anthem for US?

The national anthem of the United States is "The Star-Spangled Banner." It was written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 during the War of 1812, when Key witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Chesapeake Bay. Key was inspired by the sight of the American flag, still flying over the fort after the battle, and he wrote the poem "The Defense of Fort M'Henry" that same night. The poem was later set to music and became known as "The Star-Spangled Banner." The song was officially designated as the national anthem of the United States in 1931.
