Bona was born in the village of Minta, Cameroon, and began playing bass at the age of 11. He studied classical music at the National Conservatory of Music in Yaoundé, Cameroon, and later moved to Paris, France, where he began his professional music career.
Bona has released over a dozen albums as a solo artist, and has collaborated with many other notable musicians, including Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and George Benson. He has also performed and recorded with the WDR Big Band, the NDR Big Band, and the Metropole Orkest.
Bona's music is often described as a fusion of jazz, African rhythms, and world music. His playing style is characterized by his use of harmonics, slapping, and tapping techniques. He is also known for his soulful vocals and his ability to improvise.
