Where were the British defeated when Francis Scott Key wrote your national anthem?

Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner" based on his experience during the Battle of Baltimore, which took place in September 1814, not after the British had been defeated. During this battle, the British attacked Fort McHenry, a US fort located in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Key witnessed the battle from a British ship where he was being held captive, and he was inspired by the sight of the American flag still flying over the fort after the battle to write the poem that would later become the national anthem of the United States.
