What Equipment Is Used in a Recording Studio?

In a modern recording studio, you'll find specialized electronic equipment designed to capture the musician's art. Every studio needs to accomplish the same basic tasks: record and edit the music, listen to it, enhance and correct the sound, and mix it down to a final version. Because they all need to do these things, you'll find this equipment in any studio you might visit.
  1. Microphones

    • A studio will have different microphones for vocals, drums and instruments.

    Sound Mixer

    • The sound mixer has controls to arrange and blend the various musical parts together.

    Effects Units

    • If you're looking for concert-hall acoustics or need to fix a pitch problem, electronic effects can help.

    Recorder

    • During the studio session, the music is recorded to tape or a computer hard disk. Each musical part can be edited or redone separately.

    Speakers

    • A good studio will have speakers in both the control room and the live room where the musicians work. Some studios have several different speakers, so they can tell how songs will sound on a small radio or a home stereo.

    Media

    • Professional studios will keep blank CDs and tapes handy. When the session is done, the musicians can take home demos of their music.

    Accessories

    • A well-equipped studio will have a variety of accessories, such as cables, microphone and sheet music stands.
