Create a wall that separates the control room from the main recording area. The control room will house the mixing board, computers and effect rack units that will be used during recording and mixdown. Allow 30 percent of your total space for your control room. If you record bands and other musicians, this is where they will hang out to hear playback of takes, and the entire mixing process will occur in this room as well. Install a large, double-paned window between the control room and the main recording area as well.
Carpet the control room and add open-faced rack units to hold effects and a couch for everyone to sit while listening. Carpeting can save money as opposed to installing wood floors and will deaden the room and eliminate standing sound waves.
Carpet half of your main recording room and use wood floors for the other half. This will give your room versatility for recording. The carpeted area will be a dead-sounding area for better control over drums and guitars. The wood flooring will allow you to record orchestral instruments and sessions where a live room sound would be appropriate such as with jazz and blues music.
Build two isolation booths on one side of your basement studio. They should be about 6-by-6 feet and be completely sound proof. Use carpet on the floors and walls and acoustic sound foam on the walls. Put a small window facing the control window in one of the booths for communication with the vocalist and to prevent him from feeling claustrophobic. Recording vocals with no room interference will allow you to control the final sound of the vocals in the mix. You can than add reverb and delay as required. If the room is too live, you cannot remove the natural reverb that will be permanent on the track.
Build a utility closet on the other side of the studio. You can store many different pieces of equipment, including microphones and cables. Put movable shelving in the room as you may want to use the utility closet to record guitar and bass amps. Move the shelving out and set up your equipment in this multi-purpose room.
