When creating a file for the first time, it is useful to create a new folder with the artist's name or album title, and within that folder create folders for individual songs. Doing this saves you from searching for what project you want to work on, and gives you more time to record. Set up your routing situation by adding buses using the "Devices" tab. Add the number of tracks you need to record and label them. Labeling them before recording is important, because they will be saved on your hard drive by that name. Should the hard drive crash, or the songs be mixed on another computer, this step will save you a considerable amount of extra trouble. Open the mixer and make sure all your inputs match the channel they are going to be recorded on in Nuendo. Activate them to record, and set your volume levels.
While Nuendo is recording, you will see the sound wave of the tracks drawn in red rectangles. If you merely see a straight line in the rectangles, check to make sure your inputs are selected correctly. After each track is recorded, save your work.
All the power of nondestructive digital editing is available in Nuendo. Use the scissors tool and splice tracks just as you would with a razor blade on actual tape. Comp multiple tracks into one by creating a new track and pasting the edits to the single track. "Crossfade" is a powerful command that will smooth out the audio between edited splices.
Nuendo gives you a powerful mixer, complete with automation. Pan your tracks to the left or right by grabbing the white line just below the input selections on the mixer. Insert effects on each individual track, or set up effects buses using the "Project" and "Add Track" menus. Automate your mixes with the write feature. You can automate an individual track's volume, eq, and panning. You can also automate the effects buses and the main stereo output bus.
The "Audio Mixdown" feature will allow you to save your song in several formats including .wav, MP3 and AIFF. Choose whether to mixdown to stereo or mono. Also select what bit rate you want your project to be saved as.
