How to Make Your Own Music Tracks

Creating your own music has never been easier with home recording. Computer recording has enabled budding songwriters to record albums in their bedroom. There are many software programs that can record, edit and produce music to a high standard. The leading manufacturers in this field are Logic and Protools and these are both industry standard. There is also lower-end software such as Garageband for Mac and Cubase for PC. The following tutorial is applicable to most basic audio editing programs.

      Load an empty project in the program, click “Track” and select “New Audio Track." For recording live instrumentation or vocals, select “Audio Track.” For recording MIDI, click “New Software Instrument."

      Connect audio interface, if using one, or select "Built in Microphone" in the program preferences. Record enable track.

      Select "Track Tempo" in metronome settings. The most common tempo used in popular music is 120bpm. Perform into microphone and listen back through headphones to check sound level.

      Click "Record" and perform the song. Stop recording after finishing the track. To add other instrumentation, repeat Step 2 and choose “New Track” to select the appropriate track. Record as before.

      Open the mixer window under the "Tools" tab and adjust the levels of your tracks to achieve desired sound.

      Save the track and name the song. To export, select file “Bounce” and name the track and select destination for the track to be exported to. Choose the format of the song (i.e MP3 or AIFF file). Click “Bounce” or “Export." The file will be exported to the chosen destination.
