How to Produce Your Own CD

Producing music has gotten much easier over the years. For many artists, coming up with cash for studio time and finding someone to create multiple copies of a CD were dream killers. But now the entire process of producing a high-quality CD has moved from the recording studio to the studio apartment. Just about anyone can reap the benefits of the user-friendly modern age of CD production.

Instructions

    • 1

Record your music in your home studio. The software you use will save your songs as WAV audio files.

    • 2

Download sound-converting software, such as Switch Sound, for about $30 as of July 2010 (see Resource section). Check that the software can convert WAV files into Windows Media Audio files or MP3s, which are the easiest to work with.

    • 3

Compile all of your converted audio files in the same folder and load the folder into the CD-burning program on your computer. If you don't have a program, buy an external CD burner. A good one cost about $60 in July 2010 (see Resource section).

    • 4

Insert a blank CD into your computer's CD drive or the external drive. Type in a project name and song titles if you want them to show up on certain CD player display screens.

    • 5

Burn the CD. This gives you a master copy. Repeat the process for more copies. Your other option is to send the CD to a company such as Disc Makers that makes copies at bulk rates and even prints artwork on the discs. (See Resource section.)
