Place the vocal microphone directly in front of the position of the singer's mouth. While the distance between the singer and the microphone often varies and can be determined by the singer's style, the microphone should be placed where the singer can remain comfortably in position. Singers that work close to the microphone often require a screen or pop filter.

    • 2

Place another microphone in front of the sound hole of the guitar. The exact placement of this microphone requires a little trial and error. Guitarist Barry Rudolph suggests starting above the E-string and moving the microphone around to find the best sound. Positions vary from guitarist to guitarist depending on the how the musician positions his hands while playing the guitar.

Connect the microphones to a sound mixer. Adjust the levels of the microphones individually to find the perfect sound mix. Alternately, route each microphone to the computer or recording device. If each microphone is recorded as a separate track the sound levels can be individually controlled during post production.
