How to Build Studio Monitor Stands

Studio monitors provide feedback for audio being recorded in a studio setting. They are a vital piece of equipment in the process as they are the true indication of what the final product will sound like when played on an external audio player. Building your own stands where you can install the studio monitors is a good way to personalize your setup on a tight budget.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit down in the studio as you would normally while editing and listing to the recorded music. The ideal placement of the monitors will be at ear level while you are seated.

    • 2

Mark with tape on the lamp where the ideal placement of the monitor would be. Mark both the top and bottom of the monitor.

    • 3

Cut off the top of the lamp using the hacksaw just below the tape marking the top of the monitor. You will be cutting through the lamp cord at this time--do not be concerned.

    • 4

Pull the lamp cord out the bottom of the lamp so it is completely removed from the device.

    • 5

Hold the monitor up to the newly cut lamp, aligning the bottom of the speaker with the bottom tape marking. Mark with tape on the lamp the point where the monitor's mount can connect to the lamp. The monitor mount is a metal hole inside the monitor where a mount, such as a screw, can hold up the device. Also mark the point where a monitor cable can connect to the monitor's terminals through the lamp.

    • 6

Drill into the lamp at the mount's marking with a drill bit that's slightly smaller than the screw. Do not drill the entire way through the lamp.

    • 7

Drill a larger hole with a half-inch diameter into the point of the monitor terminal marking.

    • 8

Insert the screw into the newly created mount hole using a screwdriver. Leave the screw sticking out 1 or 2 centimeters.

    • 9

Run the monitor cable from the mixer, up through the lamp and out the newly created terminal hole.

    • 10

Hang the monitor onto the lamp, balancing the monitor mount onto the screw.

    • 11

Connect the monitor cable into the monitor's terminal.
