What is Needed to Transfer From LPs to CDs?

Transferring LPs to CDs allows you to store your the music and play it through a more modern format.
  1. Turntable and Amplifier

    • The record turntable is an essential component in transferring LPs to CDs. This is what the records you wish to transfer are played on. Its twin component, the amplifier, amplifies the record and acts as a medium through which you can connect the record player to your computer using RCA jacks.

    RCA Cable

    • The RCA cable allows you to connect your amp to your computer. To do this, simply plug the black and red jack end of an RCA cable into the line-out sockets on the back of your amp. Plug the other end--the mini-jack end--of your RCA cable into the line-in socket on the back of your computer, or the headphone socket if you are using a laptop.

    Computer

    • The computer or laptop is needed to run the music recording software you use to record your vinyl before transferring it to a CD using the disc burning software.

    Recording Sofware

    • Music recording software such as GarageBand, Reason, Fruity Loops, Cubase and many other programs are often free to download on the Internet to record your vinyl. To do this, set up your program to record a new track. Turn the "Line-in" option on your program on and start to play your LP. Adjust the volume so that your record volume does not exceed the maximum record level indicated on the recording software's gauge. Take your stylus off of the record and replace it in its cradle. Press "Record" on your music recording program and put the needle back at the beginning of your LP.

Disc Burning Software and Blank CD-R

    • Your disc burning software, such as iTunes or Windows Media Player, enables you to burn your record vinyl onto your blank CD-R. Do this by importing the saved LP file into the program. Insert the blank CD-R into your computer's disc drive and click "Burn" on your CD burning software.
