How to Make Jam Loops With a Fostex MR-8

The Fostex MR-8 is the first solid-state memory recorder that offers eight tracks of recording on CompactFlash card media. Besides its on-board effects and mastering tools, the original MR-8 -- which has since been succeeded by the Fostex MR-8mkII -- also made it possible to make and jam along to loops. By activating the loop mode and setting "A" and "B" points, you can make the MR-8 continue to play a guitar part, for example, until it reaches the "B" point and then start at the "A" point again until you pressed the "stop" button.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the MR-8. Connect headphones to the headphones jack. Set the "Input A/Select" switch to "guitar." Connect a guitar to the "Unbalanced/Guitar" 1/4-inch connector of the "Input/A" section. Press the "Rec Select" key for track 1. Record a guitar part.

    • 2

Mark the beginning and end of the section. Store the "Locate A" point while the recorder is playing back (or stopped) by pressing the "Locate A/In" key while holding down the "Store" key. The MR-8 then stores the time value of the recorder position to the "Locate A" point, and "Store Locate A" is shown on the display.

    • 3

Store the "Locate B" point while the recorder is playing back (or stopped) by pressing the "Locate B/Out" key while holding down the "Store" key. The MR-8 then stores the time value of the recorder position to the "Locate B" point, and "Store Locate B" is shown on the display. Make sure the auto punch in/out mode is inactive. The loop mode is then active, and the "Locate A" and "Locate B" points are used as the loop start and end points.
