How to Work With Noise Reduction With Sony Sound Forge 9

Sony's Sound Forge 9.0 is the first version of the popular audio editing software to come packaged with the Noise Reduction plug-in. Sony's Noise Reduction is a powerful tool for fine tuning a track or cleaning up the undesirable background noise of recorded audio. While rescuing hopelessly garbled audio is still beyond our reach, this software can restore luster to noisy music takes or voice overs marred by the sound of an AC unit or unpleasant room tone.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a small portion of the noise no more than 1 second long on your track by highlighting a small amount on the timeline. Select only the noise, avoiding any background clicks, pops or partial words or sounds as the software will use this selection to discern signal from undesirable noise. Touch the “Z” key to implement zero crossing to ensure a smooth selection.

    • 2

Open Sound Forge's Noise Reduction plug-in from the “FX Favorites” or “Tools” menu. Select "Default for fast computers" from the drop-down menu to revert the settings to a neutral state.

    • 3

Check the "Capture Noiseprint" box from the lower left-hand corner and then preview the selection to ensure you properly selected your representative noise. If you preview the selection a second time you will already notice the plug-in smoothing out your noise signal.

    • 4

Right-click on the gray area to the right of the “General” settings tab and select "Select All Data" to apply noise reduction on the entire wave form.

    • 5

Preview your wave form while adjusting the Noise bias and Reduce noise by (dB) faders to taste. Its best to start in “Mode 3” noise reduction as too much noise reduction results in undesirable sonic artifacts. Click “OK” to apply the noise reduction.
