How to Record Acoustic Bass Frequency Range

Recording an acoustic bass guitar or acoustic upright bass in the studio may require the equipment to be set to accept a wider frequency range than standard recording techniques call for. By allowing certain frequency ranges to be recorded the sound will be fuller, deeper and more realistic. The frequency range of the acoustic bass instruments is generally 50-100 hertz. The lower-end 50 hertz will pick up the boom and overtones of the bass while the 100 hertz range picks up initial attack and definition.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the microphone near the acoustic bass, 6 inches from the sound port (the middle hole in the body for acoustic guitar or side "F" cuts for an upright). Open the music recording software.

    • 2

Open the equalization submenu interface in the recording software by clicking the "File" tab and then "Equalization." Click the wave form that appears in the interface. Drag the wave form's right side and drag it down to the "50hz" tick mark.

    • 3

Click the left side of the wave form and drag it to the "100hz" tick mark; the entire form will now resemble a diagonal line instead of a curve. Click "Ok" or "Apply" depending on the program. Record the bass normally.
