How to Prevent the Removal of an XLR Plug

XLR cables are an essential part of any home studio or live sound setup. Used to connect numerous audio components like microphones, preamplifiers, mixers and monitors, XLR cables use a three-pin connector to deliver an audio signal between different audio components. If an XLR cable comes loose while in use, it can be frustrating at best and disastrous at worse. If you use XLR cables and need to make sure that they do not come loose, you can avoid these potential problems with some careful preparation and a little know-how.

Things You'll Need

  • "Latching" or "locking" XLR cables

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the "female" end of the XLR plug into the end of the microphone or other audio device. Push the XLR connector in until you hear an audible "click' and the latch release locks into place.

    • 2

Plug the "male" end of the XLR cable into an XLR input on a PA system or other audio hardware, again pushing firmly until you hear a click. As noted, if the latch does not make an audible click, the XLR is still prone to coming loose.

    • 3

Tug on the end of the XLR cable with gentle pressure to test the connection. If the XLR does not come loose by pulling on the cable with slight hand pressure, the latch is functioning properly ad it will now be much more difficult to accidentally dislodge the XLR cable.
