How to Reduce Background Noise on a CD

In previously recorded material, sometimes there is background noise such as tape hiss, hum, needle ticks, pops or other obtrusive sound. But you can do something about it -- there are forms of advanced digital signal processing that can reduce and sometimes eliminate the noise content. In Logic Pro 8 for Mac OS, there is a convenient plug-in that will target background noise.

Instructions

    • 1

Highlight the track that is producing the unwanted noise.

    • 2

In the channel strip to the left of the track, select "Specialized" > "De-Noiser" from the channel strip. This plug-in separates the track into separate channels, allowing you to place filters on different frequencies.

    • 3

Adjust the "Threshold," "Reduce," and "Noise Type" sliders until you have eliminated the unwanted noise. This is a trial and error process. Play around with different combinations until you have eliminated the unwanted noise.

    • 4

Select the "Default" pull-down menu. Here you will find a list of filters to further eliminate hiss and pops. Select the appropriate filter for the noise you want to eliminate.
