How to Put the Tape on a Sony 7 Reel-to-Reel Tape Recoder

Reel-to-reel tape players were very popular from the 1950's to the mid 1990's. Starting in the early 1960's, many companies such as Telefunken, Wollensak, and Sony began mass-producing tape recorders for both home and professional use. 7-inch reel to reel tape recorders were the most common recorder produced.

Sony reel-to-reel tape recorders were manufactured in Japan and were one of the first tape recorders to be "Solid-state" or use a transistor as opposed to tubes. This made Sonys very reliable.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your tape reel from its box.

    • 2

Look at the center of your tape reel. You will see a 1/4-inch circle and 3 slots that extend from this circle.

    • 4

    • 5

Twist your tape reel counter-clockwise until a 10-inch piece of tape has come un-raveled. This is your lead tape.

    • 6

Weave your tape strip across the wheels and tape head on your tape recorder until the strip of tape is on the left side of your tape recorder.

    • 7

Slide your tape onto your blank reel and out of one of the slots on the side. Hold this piece of tape with your finger.

    • 8

Twist the blank reel to the left until the tape has become anchored to the right reel.

    • 9

Press play. You will hear sound from your tape.
