How to Import MIDI Drums to Sonar 7

Cakewalk's SONAR software is a complete digital audio workstation, designed to handle MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) sequencing as well as audio, combining them in synchronization. The ability to incorporate MIDI performances allows for control and collaboration, and SONAR's MIDI editing functions aid customization and easy integration of virtual instruments. Version 7 includes Studio Instruments Drums, which allow enhanced sampling and control for MIDI drums.

Instructions

    • 1

Select "Open a Project" from the Quick Start menu when you open SONAR 7 and choose the file with the MIDI drum performance that you wish to import. Click on "File" from the toolbar and select "Save As" from the drop-down menu. Choose "Normal" in the "Save As Type" box. Subsequent changes to the imported MIDI drums will not be saved in a MIDI file format.

Select the track with the drum performance. Right-click on the Track Header box anywhere the icon turns to a double arrow. Choose "Track Properties" from the menu. Click on the down-arrow beneath "Output" to select the synthesizer or virtual instrument you wish to use for MIDI drum sounds. You may need to load a virtual instrument or software synthesizer first, using the Synth Rack, depending on your set-up.

Set "Channel" to 10 if it is not already, and choose Bank and Patch information if it applies to your synthesizer or virtual instrument. Click on "OK" when you are done. Use the synth or virtual instrument controls to alter the sound of your MIDI drums. Use the Piano Roll View and/or the Event List to edit MIDI data.
