Open your music software and load the vocals to edit. Highlight and select the first set of vocals, if doing more than one set, and click the "Effects" menu. Locate the vocal effects section, if not titled "Effects."
Select the "De-esser" option from the list of options, if available, and set the "Gain" and "Delay" options according to your preference. The De-esser effect controls the vocal tone and enhanced expression (ad-libs). Press the "Play" button to preview the vocals. Save the file if you are satisfied, or click the cancel button to set the parameters again.
Select the "Noise-gate" option from the "Effects" menu. Adjust the "Gain," "Attach" and "Release" parameters to the desired settings. Noise-gate will cause background noise to be eliminated from the vocal recording. Preview the vocals by pressing the "Play" button and select the "Compressor" or "Limiter" option from the "Effects."
Compress the selected vocals by setting the "Ratio," "Attack" and "Drive" parameters according to your preference. Don't over compress the vocals or they will sound distorted and drowned by remaining instruments. Save the file and click the "Play" button to preview the vocals.
Adjust the "EQ" settings, which can be found in the "Effects" section, and move the last three sliders on the left to the halfway mark. Move the remaining sliders up one by one slowly until you have the desired mix. Save the file to your computer.
