How to Mix Vocals in Mixcraft

Mixcraft is a digital audio workstation for PC. With it, you can record, edit, mix and master your music using your computer. Mixing is the process of balancing the levels between audio, to make a more coherent, listenable overall sound. Before you mix the entire song, it's essential to balance the levels between the related instruments. When mixing vocals, find a balance which places the lead vocal at the top without overpowering the backing vocals and harmonies.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click the desktop icon to launch Mixcraft. Depending on your preferences, Mixcraft will either open a blank session or the last-saved session. To call up the required session, click "File" and select it from the drop-down menu.

    • 2

Click the "S" icon on each vocal audio channel. The "S" stands for solo. By soloing each audio track, you mute the instrument tracks. This enables you to hear the vocals in isolation.

    • 3

Hit "Play" so you can your mix adjustments in real-time.

    • 4

Adjust the "Gain" slider of the lead vocal channel as far as left as it will go before the volume units meter begins to flash. The volume units meter warns you when you boost a channel level too much. Aim to set the lead vocal just below this volume threshold, so it is the loudest one in the mix. Mixcraft is atypical in that the mixer dials move horizontally, rather than vertically. This means that to increase the gain you slide the dial right, rather than up.

    • 5

Move the "Gain" slider dial for each backing vocal to approximately 60 percent of the level of the lead vocal. Because there are more of them, they will naturally be more prominent. If 60 percent is too loud for your tastes, reduce the level by 10 percent. Make sure the backing vocals are all at the same level.

    • 6

Adjust the "Gain" slider for any harmony vocals so they are approximately 80 percent of the level of the lead vocal. Since harmony vocals appear fleetingly in a song, it's fine to push them a little louder so the listener gets the full harmonic impact.

    • 7

Click the "FX" tab on the lead vocal channel and select "Reverb." Reverb adds ambiance and space to audio. Tweak the reverb parameters to taste. Set the "Depth" high for an intense, wash-like reverb that adds ambiance and space to your sound. This creates a vocal effect similar to those used on "power ballad" songs in the '80s. Set it low for a subtle effect.
