How to Slice Beats on a SONiVOX Sampla

Sonivox is a virtual instrument and software manufacturer, specializing in music production tools. Sampla is a beat sequencer that allows you to create, store and edit beats. With Sampla, you can create a beat, then use the slice function to chop it up into segments. This is a convenient way of using an existing beat in a variety of novel contexts. The Sampla interface has a virtual drum machine, with 16 pads. You can assign a part of your beat to each of these pads to create an intuitive and easy-to-use virtual drum sampler.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click on the desktop icon to open Sonivox Sampla.

    • 2

Right-click on a pad and select "Load Sample." Select the beat you want to slice from the menu. This opens the beat in the Sonivox Sampla window. The beat is displayed as a sound wave, featuring an arrangement of peaks and lines, similar to the appearance of a heart rate monitor. The height of the peak is directly proportionate to the volume of the beat. You can use the sound wave to determine where the a beat, or part of a beat, starts and finishes.

    • 3

Click the "Slice Mode" button. This enables you to set a number of slice regions by clicking on the horizontal time bar. These are automation points that appear on the audio file. These dictate the point at which a slice of audio starts and ends.

    • 4

Move the slice region markers so they match up with the audio wave form peaks. You can create a region with as many or as few peaks as you like; provided the peaks are neatly trimmed it will sound cool. To neatly separate the beat into segments, drag the slice region left or right so that it lines up perfectly with the left edge of the sound wave peak.

    • 5

Right-click on the slice region and select "Map to Pad." Select the pad you want to use to trigger that part of the beat. Alternatively, click "Auto Map" and let Sampla automatically assign each beat region to a particular pad. Sampla will map the first slice region in the window to the first available pad and each subsequent slice region to the next available pad.

    • 6

Click on each pad to determine which pad has which beat slice. Hit the pads together, in sequence or in isolation to trigger the beat slices in real-time.
