How to Fix a Lip Sync

Band leader Paul Whiteman revolutionized performing back in 1930 with an off-hand suggestion. Whiteman's idea to prerecord a musical sequence for filming so the dancers and actors in a scene could repeat takes while the set carpenters worked in the background changed how musicals are filmed and had a great result. The film "The Broadway Melody" won the Academy Award for Best Picture, the first musical to win the highly-coveted award. Lip-synching remains the standard for the visual presentation of musical performances today in film, television and online videos.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your video editing software audio formats. Make sure the software uses the audio format of your songs. Place the original audio track into your open video in a format that is compatible.

    • 2

Load the video track from your digital camera into the video editing software. Align the video and audio tracks so they are time-synched according to your editing software's method.

    • 3

Play the video and audio tracks. Look for the lip synch glitch in the audio track. Note the exact moment it occurs in the time sequence. Stop the play function.

    • 4

Place the cursor two to three seconds before the lip synch glitch. Play the track at half-speed. Find the frame where the video begins to deviate from the audio.

    • 5

Place the cursor one frame before the deviation. Cut two frames. Move the cursor five seconds before the lip synch glitch. Play the audio and video tracks together. Check to see if the cut corrected the lip synch glitch. If there is still a slight misalignment, repeat the step, cutting no more than five frames total to align the video and audio tracks.
