How to Set Parametric EQ

Parametric equalizers are often divided into several bands, or sections, that allow for equalization of the high, midrange and low frequencies. Parametric equalizers are unique in that you can not only vary the equalization frequency of a band, but you can also vary its bandwidth. Adjusting the frequency of a band will allow you to determine whether you want to boost or cut the high frequencies, midrange frequencies or low frequencies. Adjusting the bandwidth of a band will determine how these frequencies are manipulated. A wide bandwidth will make subtle, more natural sounding equalization adjustments whereas a narrow bandwidth will make precise, but less natural sounding adjustments.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a frequency band to adjust on the parametric equalizer. Some parametric equalizers have as little as one band, while others have 10 or more.

    • 2

Choose the frequency you wish to equalize by adjusting the "Frequency" or "Hz" control.

    • 3

Select the "Notch" or "Shelf" option on this frequency band. The "Notch" option will boost or cut a range of frequencies around the frequency selected. The "Shelf" option will boost or cut the frequencies above or below the selected frequency.

    • 4

Determine the width of this equalizer band by adjusting the "Q." A low "Q" of 1 will have a wider bandwidth, while a high "Q" of 10 will have a narrower bandwidth.

    • 5

Boost or cut the "Gain" to increase or decrease the volume of the selected frequency.
