How To Freeze Melodyne

Pitch correction enables you to correct out-of-tune notes, which removes the need for rerecording an otherwise perfect take. You can also use pitch correction creatively. One technique, called "freezing," requires you to set the correction parameters to alter every note in a melody to the same pitch for a robotic, artificial sound. Melodyne is a pitch-correction plug-in for digital audio workstations such as Logic, GarageBand and Pro Tools. For best results, your computer must have at least 2 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM).

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click the desktop icon for your preferred digital audio workstation.

    • 2

Open the "Plugins" menu, and click "Melodyne." A new interface will open on top of the existing session interface. This interface has a grid with pitch represented on the vertical axis and time, measured in beats and bars, represented on the horizontal axis.

    • 3

Click the "S" icon to solo the audio track you want to freeze. Solo mode enables you to hear just the audio you are editing rather than any backing tracks.

    • 4

Drag the file from the session interface into the Melodyne window. If you don't solo it, you risk importing other audio files as well, depending on how your audio channels are arranged. Once you have imported the file, you'll notice the notes appear in the Melodyne interface as small sound waves. Melodyne uses the energy patterns in the sound waves to determine where one note ends and another begins. This representation isn't always accurate, and sometimes Melodyne treats one note as two.

    • 5

Click "Note," and select "No Pitch Snap." This mode allows you to move entire notes in one go and prevents Melodyne from breaking single notes into two notes automatically.

    • 6

Click "Play" to hear the notes as you alter them.

    • 7

Click and drag each sound wave to the desired note. Use the vertical axis as a guide for which pitch you are dragging each note. To create the freeze effect, drag each note to the same pitch.

    • 8

Click "Preview" to hear the Melodyne vocal with the song.

    • 9

Drag the file from the Melodyne interface back into the digital audio workstation session interface.

    • 10

      Click "Save."
