How to Modify Vocals in Mixcraft

Mixcraft by Acoustica is a Windows-only, multi-track digital audio workstation (DAW) application. More than just a recording application, Mixcraft includes tools for manipulating and editing both audio and MIDI information. Modifying vocals in Mixcraft is primarily facilitated by the included plugins, such as the compressor and equalizer. Equalization in particular is a powerful tool for modifying the tone of a vocal track. Other effects, such as delay and chorus, are also often used as creative tools to modify vocal recordings in nearly unlimited ways. Mixcraft has native versions of almost all common audio processing effects.

Instructions

  1. Equalization

    • 1

Open Mixcraft by double-clicking on its desktop icon. Once loaded, open the vocal track you want to modify by opening "File" and choosing "Open." Locate the vocal track file in the file browser and double-click it. Mixcraft will open the vocal track on an audio track.

    • 2

Load the equalizer plugin on the vocal track by clicking on the button labeled "FX" in its track header. The track's Effects Management window will open at the bottom of the screen.

    • 3

Click on the first empty effects slot in the Effects Management window. It will be labeled "<Select An Effect>." A pop-up menu will appear listing the available effect plugins. Choose "Acoustica EQ." Mixcraft's native equalizer plugin will be loaded on the vocal track and its interface will appear. It presents as a standard, 10-band equalizer commonly seen on stereos and other audio equipment.

    • 4

Cut all frequencies below 50Hz by lowering the furthest-left slider all the way to the bottom. Sound information below this frequency generally serves only to cloud the overall mix. Audio engineers will often cut these frequencies as a matter of course, particularly when working with vocals.

    • 5

Boost frequencies in the 120-to-260Hz range to give the vocals greater fullness or "brightness." Increasing frequencies in this range often helps to make weaker vocals stand out in the mix.

    • 6

Lower frequencies in the 120-to-260Hz range to make the vocals flatter or, in common studio parlance, "darker." Recordings of vocalists with very strong, bright voices are often well-served by this approach.

    • 7

Try cutting frequencies above approximately 15,000kHz. In many cases, particularly when dealing with female vocals, this will help to clarify the sound as well as minimizing any static or white noise in the recording.

    • 8

Experiment with different equalization settings. Equalization has many practical applications and is the most important tool in audio engineering. However, equalizers are also frequently used as creative tools. A wide range of effects can be created using extreme equalization settings on vocal tracks.

    Other Effects

    • 9

Add reverb to the vocal track by clicking on the vocal track's "FX" button and then clicking on the first available effects slot. Choose "Acoustica Reverb" from the pop-up list. Mixcraft will load its native reverb plugin on the vocal track and display its interface. Open the "Presets" drop-down menu and choose a preset that appeals to you. Reverb is often used subtly to smooth out the overall sound of a track, but it can also be used for creative effect.

    • 10

Experiment with Mixcraft's chorus and delay effects, called "Acoustica Chorus" and "Acoustica Delay" respectively. Open them as described in Step 1. The chorus effect digitally multiplies the original sound, and the delay effect creates a virtual echo with adjustable parameters. These can be used on vocal tracks for a wide variety of creative effects.

    • 11

Use Mixcraft's "Acoustica Compressor" plugin if the vocal track has very strong dynamic contrasts that may interfere with its ability to mix well with other sounds. For example, the vocalist may have sung too quietly in some parts and too loudly in others. A compressor will even out the overall volume of the track by increasing the volume of quiet parts and reducing the volume of louder parts. Mixcraft's compressor plugin has several presets specifically for vocals.
