Connect a USB cable to the “MIDI Out” port on a MIDI controller. MIDI controllers enable you to operate and record the synthesized and samples sounds in Mixcraft. They are ostensibly the same as a keyboard, but rather than generating a sound, they trigger a software sound.
Connect the other end of the USB cable to the USB port on your computer. Because MIDI is universal, Mixcraft will automatically recognize the connected MIDI controller.
Double-click the desktop icon to launch Mixcraft.
Click “File” and select “Recent.” From the drop-down menu, select the relevant session, for example, “Dubstep 1.”
Click “File” and select “New MIDI.” This opens a new MIDI channel, to which the connected MIDI controller is automatically assigned as the primary input device.
Name the channel “Dirty Dubstep Wobble.”
Load up the “Alien 303” preset from the “Instruments” menu and select the “Liquid Darkness” preset. This creates a thick, heavy bass sound.
Hit “Record” and play in a bass line using the keys on the MIDI controller. It doesn’t matter if you make a mistake; you can rerecord as many times as is necessary.
Click on the “Dirty Dubstep Wobble” channel to highlight it. This assigns all subsequent edits to this channel only, rather than the mix as a whole.
Select the “Classic Auto-Filter” effect from the “Effects” menu. This effect modulates the sound. As the frequencies modulate from low to high, it creates a wobbling effect. Tweak the filter parameters to find a wobble that you like. The higher the “Rate” parameter, the quicker the wobble. The higher the “Depth” parameter, the more intense the wobble.
Select “Distortion” from the “Effects” menu. Distortion adds harmonics to a sound. The effects range from a gentle crunch to an intense, dirty fuzz. Play with the “Gain” level to find a suitable level of dirtiness for your tastes.
Hit “Save” and exit.
