How to Make a Radio Jingle

Creating radio jingles can be a good way for songwriters to make money. Local radio stations are a good place to start as they will usually source production music from a library; if you can provide original, memorable jingles for them they are unlikely to turn you down.

Instructions

    • 1

Listen out for radio jingles and study them. They will usually be catchy, with a simple melody and instrumentation, but with a memorable hook. Jingles are essentially like a logo for the product they are advertising.

    • 2

Write jingles for a fictional business to get practice.

    • 3

Familiarize yourself with the product you are writing the jingle for. You need to know exactly what it does and what makes it better than other rival products. The benefits should be outlined somehow in the jingle, even if it’s done in a humorous way.

    • 4

Leave instrumental sections in the jingle so that the announcer can talk over them. Create sections that will be suitable for looping so that the radio advertisers can edit the jingle to suit their advert. This means having an instrumental section where certain bars are repeated.

    • 5

If you are hiring musicians, get the best performers you can afford.

    • 6

Repeat the name of the product several times throughout the song so that listeners remember it.

    • 7

Create three separate mixes of your jingle, whether you’re doing this yourself using a home computer and a digital studio or someone is mixing this for you. One mix should be 10 seconds, and the other two should be 30 and 60 seconds respectively.
