How to Mix a Rap Song on Cubase

Audio mixing is both a science and an art form that can be applied to any genre of music. But mixing hip hop and rap music comes with its own set of rules and expectations. For instance, most hip hop songs are mixed with the vocals up front and the bass and drums pushed up in the mix. Cubase, a cross-platform audio recording program popular with both recording engineers and hip hop producers, comes with a variety of powerful mixing and mastering tools to aid in achieving that perfect mix.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Cubase program on your computer. Open a recently recorded project. Click on "File" then go to "Open." Navigate to your recorded hip hop project. Select it with the mouse cursor, and click on the "Open" button.

    • 2

Click on the "Mixer" icon in the upper-left corner of the Cubase window. This opens Cubase's virtual mixing environment. The mixing window features volume faders corresponding with each individual track, just as you would find on a real mixer.

    • 3

Press the play button on the transfer window near the bottom of the mixer window. Notice the different tracks and how they sound. In the case of a rap song, this will usually include a drum track, bass track, synth track, sampling track, lead vocal track and background vocal track.

    • 4

Examine the output meter on each track. Determine the loudest parts of the mix by noticing which track's output meters are consistently in the yellow and red colors on the meter. Click on the "Solo" button to isolate particular channels. Or, click the "Mute" button to silence certain channels. Do this to get a feel for what types of tracks you are dealing with.

    • 5

Adjust the volume faders until you get a balanced mix. For hip hop and rap, make sure the drums and bass tracks are prominent in the mix, but that they don't overpower the vocal tracks. Adjust the background vocal track so it sits further back into the mix.

    • 6

Adjust the virtual "Pan" knob on each channel to give your song a stereo quality. This is the knob that allows you to pan individual tracks to the left or right speaker channels in the mix.

    • 7

Try different variations of panning and volume adjustment until you achieve your desired sounding mix.
