How to Build a Guitar Headphone Amp

A portable headphone amplifier allows practicing guitar when away from your regular amp or late at night. Because it’s battery powered, you can practice anywhere and anytime at the maximum volume allowed by your headphones. With basic electronics knowledge, you can construct this electronic guitar accessory and take pride in making your own music equipment.

Things You'll Need

  • Tools:
  • Soldering Iron
  • Rosin-core solder
  • Small Phillips screwdriver
  • Wire cutter/stripper
  • Needle-nose and slip-joint pliers
  • Electric drill with 3/8 and ¼ inch bits
  • Parts:
  • LM386N-1, N-3 or N-4 amplifier IC chip with pinout diagram
  • 9 volt battery and clip
  • Small perforated circuit board (perfboard)
  • Belt clip (optional)
  • Plastic electronic project case, approximately 4 to 5 inches square by 1 to 1½ inches deep

Instructions

  1. Prepare The Project Enclosure

    • 1

Cut the perfboard to fit in the plastic project case.
Leave clearance on the sides of the perfboard for the battery, volume pot and jacks, which will be mounted after they’re connected.

    • 2

Drill a 3/8-inch hole on one side of the case for the guitar jack and a 1/4-inch hole on the opposite side for the headphone jack.
Drill a 1/4-inch hole on the top near the battery location for the volume pot.

    • 3

Mount the LM386 IC to the perforated board near the center by inserting its pins through the holes and bending them over.
Make sure none of the IC's pins touch each other.

    Wiring The Perfboard

    • 4

Insert the 33 uF capacitor leads through holes near pins 1 and 8 of the LM386 IC (consult the pinout diagram) and solder them to pins 1 and 8 of the IC.
Insert the 1-inch bare hookup wire into a hole 1/2 inch from pins 2 and 4 of the LM386 IC, and solder it to both, connecting them. Bring the other end through a hole to the top of the board. This is the ground bus wire.

    • 5

Insert the 1uF capacitor leads through holes near pin 3 of the LM386 IC and the side of the perfboard near the guitar jack, then bring the leads back up to the top, looping them through the next nearest holes to secure the capacitor to the perfboard.
Insert the 220uF capacitor leads through holes near pin 5 of the LM386 IC and the side of the perfboard near the headphone jack, then solder one lead to pin 5 of the LM386 IC and bring the other lead through the nearest hole to the top of the perfboard.
Insert the Diode leads near pin 6 of the LM386 IC with its banded end pointing away from the LM386 IC. Solder the lead from the unbanded end to pin 6 of the LM386 IC and bring the diode’s banded end lead through a hole near the battery.

    • 6

Solder a 2-inch hookup wire to the 220 capacitor’s remaining lead and the other end to the tip and inner ring connection tabs of the stereo headphone jack.
Solder a 2 inch hookup wire to the outer shield tab of the stereo headphone jack and the other end to the ground bus wire on the perfboard.
Solder a 2-inch hookup wire to one lead of the1 uF capacitor and the other end to the wiper (usually middle) leg of the volume pot.

    • 7

Solder a 2-inch hookup wire to one of the remaining volume pot’s legs and the other end to pin 3 of the LM386 IC.
Solder a 2-inch hookup wire to the other lead of the1 uF capacitor and the other end to the tip connection tab on the monaural guitar jack.
Solder a 2-inch hookup wire to the outer shield connection tab of the monaural guitar jack and the other end to the ground bus wire.
Locate the perfboard so the volume pot, guitar and headphone jacks and battery clip are positioned near their holes, leaving room for the battery, then mount the jacks and volume pot and attach the volume pot knob.

    • 8

Check that all wiring is correct, then position the battery and attach its clip so the positive snap connects to the (+) battery terminal.
Position the piece of foam so it secures the battery snugly and holds the perfboard firmly.
Tighten the case screws and gently shake it to be sure everything’s secure. If not, open the case, reposition the foam until everything’s tight, then reassemble it.
