How to Make a Headset Microphone Windscreen

Popping "p's" is a big problem with a headset microphone because your mouth is so close to the microphone. Wind is also a constant problem, if you are using your headset outdoors. Both of these problems can be solved with the use of a microphone windscreen. The good news is that you don't have to spend as much on the windscreen as you did on the headset. You can make a windscreen yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Old sock
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • Hobby foam (1/4- to 1/2-inch thick)

      Cut a saddle-shaped oval from the sock, big enough to wrap around the microphone. Leave 1/2-inch extra material for a seam around the edge of the oval. Fold the oval sock in half, and sew it shut around the edges, except for a small hole for inserting the microphone. Trim off any extra sock material around the edges, being careful not to cut any thread.

      Cut a saddle-shaped oval from the foam, slightly bigger than the sock oval. Fold it in half around the sock material and sew it shut around the edges, except for the hole for inserting the microphone.

      Trim off any extra foam around the edges. Slide your new windscreen on the microphone.
