Put on your safety glasses.
Place the length of cane into the vice clamp and tighten the clamp.
Saw the length of cane to leave 12 inches of cane. Take this opportunity to cut off any parts of the cane you would not like on your flute.
Use the 6-inch drill bit to hollow out the cane from one side and then the other. You should be able to see the whole way through the cane.
Use the round file to smooth out the interior of the cane.
Slice the cork to create a slice 1/2 inch thick and 3/4 inch in diameter.
Glue the slice of cork onto one of the ends of the cane. This will be the top of the cane flute.
Measuring from the top (where the cork cap was glued), mark 1/2 inch below the top. This is where the hole you blow in will be.
Mark with the pencil again 1 inch below the first mark. This will be the first finger hole.
Mark 3/4 inch below the second mark. Mark and measure at 3/4-inch intervals going down the length of the flute four more times, for a total of seven marks on the flute.
Soak the flute in warm water for 30 minutes, and then pat dry. Keeping the wood damp will prevent it from cracking when it is drilled.
Put the cane back in the vice and tighten.
Drill through the marks, using a wider drill bit for the blow hole and a smaller one for all the finger holes. Use the same size bit for all of the finger holes.
