Instructions for How to Record Tape Cassettes to a CD Using Roxio

Roxio Easy LP to MP3 is a kit that includes everything one might need (besides a record player or tape deck) to convert an old LP or cassette tape to a digital file, which can then be burned onto a CD or distributed digitally. It also allows you to clean up the pops, hisses and other marks of age and decay. Roxio Easy LP to MP3 requires a computer equipped with Windows XP, Vista or 7, and also a USB 2.0 port.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the heads in the cassette deck are clean, and that you engage the same noise-reduction technology (e.g., Dolby B or C) that was used to record the tape.

    • 2

Connect the USB recording device included with Roxio Easy LP to MP3 to your computer with the provided USB cable.

    • 3
RCA cables look like this. They may be red and white.

Plug the provided RCA cable into the audio input jacks on the back of the USB recorder. Be sure that the red plug goes into the red outlet and the white plug goes into the white outlet.

    • 4
      RCA jacks.

Connect the other end of the RCA cable into the audio output jacks on the back of your cassette deck. If the cassette deck does not have RCA output jacks (for example, if it is a portable cassette player such as a Walkman), use the provided minijack-to-RCA adapter cable to connect the RCA cable to the headphone jack.

    • 5

Open Easy LP to MP3 on your computer.

    • 6

Choose Audio on the menu to the left and then choose "Convert LPs and Tapes."

    • 7

Select "Line (USB Multimedia Audio Device)" as the capture device. If you are using Windows XP, also choose "Line" from the input drop-down menu.

    • 8

Click "Recording Setup Guide." Play your cassette deck at a mid-level volume to make sure the recording does not clip. To have Roxio automatically analyze the source and adjust recording levels appropriately, click the "Auto" button.

    • 9

Listen to a song through the computer using headphones or external speakers to check for hum. If you detect it, move all CRTs, televisions and sources of electronic noise away from your computer.

    • 10

Click the "Advanced Options" button to choose CD-quality recording and specify the file format. You can also adjust the sensitivity of the track separator here -- it will automatically split tracks when it encounters a moment of silence.

    • 11

Once you are satisfied with the recording levels and the cleanliness of the sound, cue your cassette to the beginning. Make sure you have enough disk space to record the entire thing (the Assistant can tell you how much time you have) and press the red "Record" button to begin recording.

    • 12

When you are finished recording, click "Next." for the chance to manually delete excess empty space and adjust track separators.

    • 13

Click the "Tags" button to edit information about each track. Alternately, use Roxio's MusicID feature to automatically identify them.

    • 14

To automatically clean or enhance the tracks, check the "Clean," "Enhance" and/or "Equalizer" boxes to the left of the interface, and then click "Next."

    • 15

To burn the new tracks to CD, place a blank CD into your computer's CD drive.

    • 16

Check the boxes next to the tracks you want to include, and click "Burn Audio CD."
