The Effects of Classical Music in the Classroom

We have all heard the claims that classical music "makes you smarter." But what does the claim really mean? According to the site EMedExpert.com, research shows that classical music activates both the left and right hemispheres of the brain, thus enhancing memory and learning. Music also can energize or calm students, enhancing attention in preparation for the learning process. Moreover, classical music of the baroque period is reported by the website NewHorizons.org to improve concentration and focus.
  1. Increases Attention

    • According to NewHorizons.org, musical sound can help in "setting and maintaining our attention ... by perking us up ... [or] helping us find peace and calm." The same source reports that "energizing Mozart music assists in holding attention during sleepy times of day." The author suggests playing background music as pupils enter the classroom to increase attention levels, thereby helping them to prepare for the learning tasks at hand. An example of energizing Mozart music is the "Overture to the Marriage of Figaro."

    Improves Focus and Concentration

    • According to NewHorizons.org, music can "create a highly focused learning state. "According to the site, baroque music (such as Bach, Handel and Telemann) of between 50 and 80 beats per minute "creates an atmosphere of focus that leads students into deep concentration." In addition, EMedExpert.com reports that relaxing classical music "improves the duration and intensity of concentration in all age groups and ability levels."

    Enhances Memorization

    • EMed Expert.com says both baroque period music and the music of Mozart played at 60 beats per minute activate the "left and right brain [which] action maximizes learning and retention of information." Moreover, HS Treasures.com reports that "music allows the sensory integration necessary for long-term memory." According to the same site, classical music also "aids in reading, language, mathematics, and overall academic achievements." Try playing such a composition at low volume while you are teaching subjects that require memorization of facts or figures.
