How to Become a Techno DJ

Techno, along with other forms of electronic music, was made possible by the technology of drum machines and synthesizers. In the early 1980s, Techno was pioneered by the likes of disc jockeys and producers, including Derrick May and Juan Atkins, and became a phenomenon in Europe during the late 1980s. To become a techno DJ, you must familiarize yourself with techno music and its history, practice and promote yourself as a techno DJ.

Instructions

    • 1

Listen to a variety of techno music, artists and producers to get a general idea of the characteristics of techno music. Familiarize yourself with techno disc jockeys like Juan Atkins and Derrick May.

    • 2

Learn how to transition and mix properly with techno music. You can either use turntables or CD players to mix. Set up and connect the DJ mixer, headphones, speakers and monitor.

    • 3

Choose the first song to play and put it on the left or right player (turntable or CD player). Turn the speaker volume up on the mixer so you can hear the song playing. While your headphones are on as you are about to cue the next record, turn the monitor volume up slightly louder than the other speakers.

    • 4

Choose the next song you plan to mix into. Take into consideration the song you are already playing. Listen to the techno beats, horns and synthesizer in that song and choose another song that would compliment it well, as you mix.

    • 5

Cue the second song in your headphones. Make sure the crossfader is all the way to the left or right--depending on which player the first song is playing on.

    • 6

Listen for the first bass beat or kick drum and match the beat with the first song in your headphones. When you are ready to mix the song live, cue the record at your starting point of the song and mix the second song into the first one.

    • 7

Move the crossfader about a quarter of the way towards the middle as you mix the second song into the first. When you are confident that your mix is matching, bring the crossfader to the middle and adjust the pitch of your song, if necessary.

    • 8

Ride the mix for 32 counts or longer, then completely crossfade out of the mix so only the second song is playing. Repeat the process to mix the next song.

    • 9

Study the techniques of other techno DJs and watch how they mix and transition into songs. You can incorporate some of these techniques into your own personal style of mixing.

    • 10

Record your mixes a few times and critique yourself or have others give you feedback on what they liked and didn't like about your mix. This can help you improve as a DJ.

    • 11

Get involved in the techno industry. Register yourself as a DJ on DJ sites that cater to techno or electronic disc jockeys. Network with others and attend events or raves to get a feel of the crowd's reaction to the performing DJ.

    • 12

Promote yourself as a techno DJ using business cards and a website to gain exposure and offer your DJ services as an opening DJ to acquire experience. You may not get paid for your performances in the beginning, but experience and practice will help you gain recognition and a following to help you become a successful techno DJ.
