How to Make Your Own Mic Stand From PVC Pipe

A microphone stand is useful if you are recording while playing an instrument or handling papers. They also keep a group of performers in arrangements and allow them to keep their hands free. You can build your own mic stand using basic PVC tubing for a fraction of the cost of a professional stand.

Things You'll Need

  • ¾-inch PVC pipe
  • Saw
  • ¾-inch PVC coupler
  • Silicone
  • 4-inch wide mounting plate, ¾-inch threaded shaft
  • 1-inch thick wood
  • Screwdriver
  • Screws
  • Black microphone clip
  • Black spray paint

Instructions

    • 1

Use a saw to cut a 5-foot-long piece of PVC pipe. Or, make the pipe longer or shorter if you want a bigger or smaller stand.

    • 2

Glue a ¾-inch PVC coupler to one end of the pipe using silicone and allow it to dry. Check that there is no silicone leaking around the coupler's edges.

    • 3

Insert the threaded shank of a 4-inch-wide mounting plate into the coupler's open end. This plate will allow you to mount the stand to a base.

    • 4

Cut out a 4-inch-wide wooden disc. This will become the stand's base.

    • 5

Place the stand on the base so that the mounting plate is set on top. Secure it in place. Use a screwdriver to insert screws through each of the drilled holes in the plate.

    • 6

Fit the microphone clip onto the top end of the pipe. If your clip has a side screw, tighten it to secure the clip to the pipe. If not, silicone the clip in place.

    • 7

Spray the stand and base with black spray paint.
