How to Value Your Piano

Musicians and people who play music for a hobby have pianos at home so they can practice. If you do not have space in your home for the piano you own or need to sell your instrument for financial reasons, you need to determine the value of your piano to get a fair sales price. If you know the manufacturer, age of the piano and its condition, you can value your piano with little effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Blue Book of Pianos webpage (see Resources). This site helps you find the worth of your instrument. To determine value, you must have the serial number, model year and the type of piano you own, such as an upright piano. A piano in top form will demand top dollar.

    • 2

Go to a local music or piano store and ask an employee for a recommendation on piano appraisers. Call the appraisers referred and ask them to come see your piano to give you an accurate appraisal.

    • 3

Go to an Internet-based service to buy a piano appraisal such as Concert Pitch Piano Services, Piano Appraisal or Piano Appraisal Online (see Resources). Complete the areas of the online form that ask for your piano's condition, style and other data to obtain an accurate appraisal. Send pictures of your instrument to show the condition.
