How to Find Your Singing Voice Range

Finding your singing voice range requires being able to identify the total register that you are capable of singing. To do this, you will need a device capable of identifying your exact pitch. One of the easiest ways to do this is to use a piano and a digital tuner. The piano will help you stay on track and sing each note correctly, and the tuner will provide you with the exact pitch that you are singing.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your digital tuner and set it in front of you either on a stand or the piano. Select the function that allows the tuner to display the pitch you are singing. This is usually the main tuner option.

    • 2

Sing a note that is comfortable for you to sing without straining your voice. Look at the tuner to determine what pitch you are singing. The tuner will provide a pitch, followed by a number. The number tells you where you are singing in relation to middle C.

    • 3

Learn how the numbers next to the note relate to the piano. Middle C is labeled as C4. C5 is an octave higher, and C3 is an octave lower than middle C. Therefore, if you sang a pitch that registered as D4, you would be singing a pitch one note higher than C4.

    • 4

Find middle C on the piano. It is the white key to the left of the set of double black keys, closest to the center of the piano. The remaining white keys are regular letter names.

    • 5

Move from left to right to find the notes C, D, E, F next to the group of three black keys, followed by G, A and B. The black keys are sharps and flats. The double group includes C-sharp and D-sharp, which can also be written as D-flat and E-flat respectively. The group of triple keys are F-sharp, G-sharp and A-sharp, which can be written as G-flat, A-flat and B-flat respectively.

    • 6

Find the first that you sang note on the piano. Begin singing in half steps using the piano keyboard as a guide down to the lowest pitch you can sing comfortably. Then, sing to the highest pitch you can sing comfortably. This is your vocal range.
