How to Organize Vinyl Record Collections

A disorganized vinyl collection makes it difficult to find the album that you want to listen to, if you can find it at all. If you have a large collection, searching for a lost record is often a frustrating and sometimes futile experience. Organizing your collection in an intelligent and strategic manner is the best way to keep track of your collection.

Instructions

    • 1

Categorize your vinyl record collection in terms of music genres. Make a list of genres such as classical, jazz, blues, world-music, country, rock and hip-hop.

    • 2

Divide the primary music genres into sub categories. Select sub-categories that are compatible with your listening habits. For example, you may want to arrange your jazz collection chronologically into swing, bebop, hard jazz, and fusion. Another option is to arrange the jazz part of your collection by instrument such as jazz piano, saxophone, trumpet or guitar.

    • 3

Arrange the particular records within the sub-category alphabetically by the name of the artist. If the sub-category is jazz trumpet, the order may be Chet Baker, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard.

    • 4

Purchase or make a shelving system for the collection. Place the record shelves and records in a warm and non-humid area of or your house or apartment.
