The initial radios found in households were large cabinet style systems that many amateur car enthusiasts converted for their cars. Car radios of the 1920s and 1930s were usually housed in a metal container that contained a receiver, a speaker and battery power supply.
Advances in home audio systems led to the development of car audio to include record players capable of playing 7-inch records, as used in the Chrysler Hi-Fi System from 1956 to 1962. From the mid 1960s car audio systems included AM/FM radios and included systems such as 8-track audio.
The commercial release of the compact disc audio system was placed into cars soon after its release. In 2010 the majority of newly manufactured cars contain audio systems, which include satellite radio systems and MP3 players.
