How to Measure Noise With a Meter

Sound pressure level (SPL) meters are quite useful in determining the loudness, or decibel level, of a variety of noises. Whether you are wondering how loud your stereo is or are trying not to violate a noise ordinance, knowing how to use an SPL meter can come in handy. Measuring noise with a sound meter is fairly simple once you understand the basic controls of the meter. When using an SPL meter, keep in mind that it measures sound on a logarithmic scale. This means than an increase of six decibels will result in a doubling in perceived loudness.

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn on your SPL meter.

    • 2

Select a sound level weighting if offered by your SPL meter. Choose the "C" weighting if you want your SPL meter to respond better to noise containing low frequency content. Select the "A" weighting if you do not require the SPL meter to detect low frequency content.

    • 3

Select the "Slow" response setting if you want your SPL meter to detect gradual changes in noise level. Select the "Fast" response setting if you want your SPL meter to respond quickly to changes in noise level.

    • 4

Point the SPL meter toward the noise source you want to measure.

    • 5

Note the decibel level that registers on your SPL meter.
