How to Write With Safe Markers on a CD

CDs, or compact discs, are used primarily to store music, movies and work files. Many people permanently destroy valuable data by making mistakes when writing on CDs. Common mistakes include using ball-point or sharp tipped pens and writing on the wrong side of the CD. Markers like Sharpies and felt-tip pens are often used to write on CDs without damaging them. There is also a specific method for writing on a CD with safe markers that protects your data from damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Practice writing your message or label on scrap paper using your CD-safe marker.

    • 2

Flip over the CD so the non-reflective side is facing up. Rotate the CD so the printed text is upright and legible from left to right.

    • 3

Locate where the data is written on the CD; the data is in the inner circle area of the CD that has a darker tint.

    • 4

Write the label or message on the outside upper portion of the CD using your CD-safe marker. Avoid the dark areas of written data on the inner rings of the CD.

    • 5

Lightly blow on the writing on the CD to quickly and safely dry the ink.
