How to Make Akai MPD Work With MIDI

The Akai MPD is a Musical Instrument Digital Interface controller that bears resemblance to the Akai MPC. The MPD, like the MPC, is based on an array of pads. The MPD pads can be used to trigger any kind of MIDI event you wish on your computer's software or on any instrument which accepts MIDI input. The MPD is a MIDI controller and, therefore, can't produce any sound on its own.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the MPD in to the computer or instrument you wish to control.

    • 2

Download and install the preset editor for your MPD model from Akai's website. The MPD series will be found under the MIDI/USB Controllers category. You can use this editor to configure the MPD precisely as you wish. This is extremely useful if you will be using it to control an instrument rather than computer software.

    • 3

Open the software (or turn on the instrument) that the MPD will be used to control.

    • 4

Press controls on the MPD to make sure your device is receiving MIDI data from the MPD. You may have to configure the MIDI channel settings on your software or instrument.

    • 5

Map the MPD's controls to the parameters you wish to control on the software.
