DIY Drum Light

A gooseneck light or "clamp lamp" is ideal for drummers who have to work on darkened stages or recording booths. Ample light is always helpful, as it helps prevent eye-strain and headaches. The gooseneck feature is useful for a drum kit, as it allows you to work around an ever-changing setup, easily moving and repositioning your light as you adjust and add to your kit.

Things You'll Need

  • Work surface with vice
  • Drill with 1/4-inch bit
  • Screwdriver
  • 12 inches Gooseneck tubing, 1/4-inch diameter, threaded at both ends
  • Heavy duty document clip, clothespeg-style
  • 1/4-inch hollow bolt
  • Standard bulb fixture with power cable and plug

Instructions

      Clamp the clip or peg in the vise on the work surface. Ensure it is properly secured and isn't going to move.

      Power on the drill and make a hole through the side of the peg. It's important that the hole is not on the clamping part of the peg, but on the side you squeeze in order to open it.

      Open the plug using the screwdriver and disconnect it from the power cable. Thread the cable through the center of the gooseneck and feed it all the way along. The bulb should now be on top of the gooseneck.

      Thread the power cable through the hole drilled in the clamp, then through the center of the hollow bolt.

      Slide the clamp along the the cable until it is flush against the base of the gooseneck, then screw the hollow bolt into it.

      Replace the plug and your flexible clip-on lamp will be ready to attach to your kit.
